Math Translation Tips

Math translation will need specific skill for sure because there is particular language which is used in math. Nevertheless, there is kind of opinion about math which is a universal language. It comes along with opinion about math as foreign language for foreign language learners. One thing for sure, mathematics can be universal language but there is challenge which should be faced by foreign language learners when they are learning math through the foreign language. There are some pros and cons which can be found when people are asking question whether math is universal language especially for foreign language learners.



Pros


Some good points can be found in mathematics after all. It is not logical but also functional. There can be many languages all around the world but in every language, people will find that 1+1=2. People can find the famous names in mathematic scientists. The mathematic history is very long. There was Jabir Ibn Hayyan who gave people with algebra. There was also another name that gave people algorithms, Mohammed Ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi. Their contribution in mathematics where written in Arabic but now people all around the world can study it in their mother language because they were translated in other languages.

Cons


People can find the good points of math but of course they can also find the bad points of math when they are asking it as universal language. In fact, people can also find the cultural differences even in math. They can impede the understanding about math meaning after all. For example, the way commas used by Europeans which is different from the Americans since they use decimal points instead. There are also different ways for teaching math in different places. Kids in the United States must show their work in mathematics. It is different from other countries which usually use mental math instead. There can be difficult expressions as well as terminology which can be found in word problem so people maybe to do not have solution for solving this problem.

Challenges



Of course there are some challenges which can be found when people are trying for translating math. Linguistic issues become one challenge and it has relation with syntax, semantics, lexicon, and also different extra linguistic notions which is inherent in the way people understanding math as well as learning it. There is also need to understand about the way specific syntactic structures maintaining the integrity for making sense. Although math can be universal language, it will take time and consideration in math translation.
